Before you start working on a project or tutorial, it is important to go over some of the basic features of the Visual Studio 2010 interface. The following tutorial is a breakdown of the basic features of the visual studio 2010 interface.

- Toolbars: The toolbars provide commands for general actions and consists of different sets of command tools.
- Document Window: The document window is the main display of you current project.
This can include various different pages of work that are separated by tabs.
- Toolbox: The toolbox is where all of the control elements are located. In design view these elements
can be dragged from the toolbox to the menu.
- View tabs: The view tabs provide different ways of viewing your work. There are three view options;
design view (provides a visual overview of your work in a WYSIWYG format); source view
(lets you view your work in code); Split view (Splits the document window so you can view both source and design at the same time).
- Solution Explorer: The solution explorer is where all of the files and folders of your website are placed.
- Server Explorer: The server explorer is where all of the database information for your website is stored.
Both the solution explorer and the server explorer widows are accessed by alternating tabs at the bottom of the explorer window.
- Properties Window: Located just below the explorer window, the properties window is where the page
and properties settings are changed and configured. The tabs located at the top of the properties window
let you alternate between pages.
